Rico Besserdich, born 1968 in Germany, is a professional underwater photographer, aquatic imaging artist, lecturer, speaker, and journalist. He has been involved in photography since 1978.
His more than 250 articles about underwater photography and scuba-diving related topics had been published in magazines and books all around the world, translated into 11 different languages.
His mission to raise awareness for the importance of water earned him recognition by the NOBEL Organisation, the United Nations, the Swedish Parliament, among others.
Rico worked as a guest lecturer of artistic underwater photography, invited by a German fine arts academy (HBK Saar, College of Fine Arts – Saarbrücken), his photographic work was awarded by National Geographic, Ocean Geographic, DIWA, PADI and The OPEN of Photography.
In various international photography competitions (underwater and above), he participated as a juror. In 2012, an underwater photography contest award in Italy was named after him („The Rico Besserdich Creative Photography Award“).
His 2 books about underwater photography are the only ones of their kind that are published in Cantonese and Mandarin Chinese as well.
He was one of the curators of the underwater-photography related art book series „Edition Fifty Fathoms“, and is frequently invited as speaker to the diving industry’s leading fairs and shows such as „BOOT“ (Germany), DEMA  (USA), EUDI  (Italy) and ADEX (Singapore).
Rico’s photographic style is characterized by elements of the classic analog Fine Art Photography, mixed with contemporary and abstract elements. He is one of the first modern photographers of the digital age who discovered these classic elements and techniques underwater, and his new expressions and styles of aquatic imaging played a major role in the international level, inspiring people all over the world.
